November Monthly Update

Fall mountain landscape with the word November.

October OSEP Webinar Recording and Materials

If you missed or want to review the webinar, "OSEP October 2023 Virtual Convening with State Deafblind Projects," you can find the recording, slides, and materials in this Basecamp folder (you must be logged in to Basecamp to access it). The webinar included essential information about OSEP expectations for state deablind projects, the role of OSEP project officers, and details about the Congressional budget appropriation related to interveners. During the webinar, Susan Weigert and Julie Durando also highlighted NCDB resources that can help state projects provide TA associated with the Department of Education's expected outcomes for 2023-2028 (see the PowerPoint slides 5 through 11).

Available in Spanish: Intervener Services Definition

Intervener Services and Interveners in Educational Settings: Definition is now available in Spanish on the NCDB website. This important factsheet discusses interveners' primary roles, how they participate as members of educational teams, and essential components of intervener training.

Redesigned Intervener IEP Team Guide

A redesigned version of Are Intervener Services Appropriate for Your Student Who Is Deafblind?: An IEP Team Discussion Guide has just been released. The look has been refreshed and updated to make it easier to read and use. The content remains the same, except for minor wording changes. The guide's purpose is to help teams make informed decisions by understanding how a student's deafblindness affects their access to information, communication, social relationships, and conceptual learning.

Website Highlight: For State Deafblind Projects

Did you know there is an entire section of the NCDB website dedicated solely for state deafblind projects? In it, you'll find resources for project management, how to connect with other state deafblind projects, technical assistance resources, and much more.

APA Hearing Assessment Recommendations

An article published in the September 2023 issue of Pediatrics provides recommendations for hearing assessment beyond the newborn period from the American Academy of Pediatrics. It includes the statement, "All children who are D/HH should have a thorough ophthalmologic evaluation to identify associated conditions (ie, Usher syndrome, CMV chorioretinitis)." The article is called, Hearing Assessment in Infants, Children, and Adolescents: Recommendations Beyond Neonatal Screening, and is available for free online.

Updated OHOA-CEC Competencies Alignment

A new NCDB document, Alignment of OHOA Modules with Council for Exceptional Children 2022 Intervener Competencies, lists which competencies are addressed in each of the 27 OHOA modules. Thanks to the state deafblind project personnel and university faculty who helped develop the document. If you have questions, contact Kristi Probst.
